Jeff Bezos Backs CuspAI in Push for AI-Designed Chip Materials

Jeff Bezos has backed CuspAI, an artificial intelligence start-up that is using AI to discover advanced materials that could support the next generation of computer chips . CuspAI recently raised $450 million at a valuation of $2.6 billion. The funding round included Bezos Expeditions, the private investment firm founded by Jeff Bezos. Nvidia and AMD are also development partners, alongside Meta Platforms. The company’s technology uses artificial intelligence to identify and test new materials virtually. CuspAI initially focused on materials for carbon capture and water purification, but the expansion of AI infrastructure created a major opportunity in the semiconductor industry. AI Could Help Address Chip Material Shortages Advanced computer chips and data center systems depend on scarce elements like gallium, iridium and tantalum. These materials are becoming more expensive and difficult to obtain as demand for AI computing grows. The International Energy Agency even warned that data center demand for gallium could exceed current supply levels by 2030. China also controls most of the world’s refined gallium production, which exposes global technology companies to geopolitical and supply-chain risks. CuspAI cannot produce these metals directly. Instead, its platform can search for alternative materials with similar properties or help scientists develop new materials that were previously difficult to synthesize. Traditional material discovery can take years and cost millions of dollars. CuspAI believes AI can reduce that process to months while lowering development costs. Why Jeff Bezos Is Investing Jeff Bezos has some interest in using artificial intelligence for engineering and manufacturing. Bezos Expeditions has also invested in Prometheus, an AI start-up helping engineers design and manufacture complex physical products. Together, these investments suggest Bezos believes AI’s next major opportunity may extend beyond software and chatbots . Artificial intelligence could help discover materials, design hardware and improve how complex products are manufactured. CuspAI is still privately owned, with no confirmed plans for an initial public offering. However, its technology could eventually benefit companies like Nvidia, AMD and other semiconductor manufacturers.
