2027 Social Security COLA Could Lift Average Retiree Check Above $2,160

Social Security retirees could see their average monthly benefit rise above $2,160 in 2027 if the latest cost-of-living adjustment projection proves accurate. The Senior Citizens League currently estimates a 3.6% Social Security COLA for 2027, down from its earlier 3.8% forecast as inflation has cooled. The adjustment would still be larger than the 2.8% COLA applied in 2026. According to the Social Security Administration's latest monthly data, retired workers received an average $2,085.98 per month in July 2026. Applying a 3.6% increase would raise that amount by roughly $75 to about $2,161 per month. 2027 Social Security COLA Estimate Falls to 3.6% The latest projection is lower than earlier estimates. The Senior Citizens League projected a 3.9% increase in May before lowering its forecast to 3.8% and then 3.6% as inflation moderated. July's CPI-W, the inflation measure used to calculate Social Security COLAs, was up 3.4% from a year earlier. If the 3.6% estimate holds, it would be the largest Social Security COLA since 2023. The adjustment was 3.2% in 2024, 2.5% in 2025 and 2.8% in 2026. The increase would not be identical for every beneficiary because COLAs are percentage-based. Someone receiving $1,500 per month, for example, would gain about $54 with a 3.6% adjustment, while a $2,500 benefit would increase by roughly $90. Why the 2027 COLA Is Not Final Yet The 3.6% figure remains a forecast, not the official Social Security adjustment. Social Security bases its annual COLA on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, or CPI-W. The calculation compares the average CPI-W during July, August and September with the average from the same three-month period a year earlier. That means August and September inflation data can still move the final figure higher or lower. The Social Security Administration is expected to announce the official 2027 COLA on Oct. 14, after September inflation figures are available. Some Social Security Checks Could Cross New Milestones Retired workers are not the only beneficiaries who could reach a new threshold. SSA data show that spouses of retired workers received an average $986.53 per month in July. A 3.6% adjustment would lift that average to roughly $1,022, pushing it above $1,000 for the first time if current benefit levels and the projected COLA hold. For retirees, however, a larger check does not automatically translate into an equivalent improvement in purchasing power. The COLA exists because consumer prices are rising. Medicare premiums, housing, food, utilities and other expenses can absorb part of the increase before beneficiaries feel much additional spending power. For now, 3.6% is the number to watch, with the average retired-worker benefit potentially reaching about $2,161 per month. But the final 2027 Social Security increase will remain uncertain until the last third-quarter inflation data arrives.
